Anita Smith, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away on April 9, 2026, at the age of 85, surrounded by the love she so freely gave throughout her life.
Anita was the devoted wife of James Smith and the proud mother of four children: Vicki Smith West, Chris Smith, Terry Smith, and Ronnie Smith. Family was the center of her world, and everything she did flowed from her deep love for them. She and James shared a beautiful life grounded in faith, a love for God, and an unwavering commitment to their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Anita spent her career as a nurse, and nursing was far more than a profession to her—it was who she was. She was one of the most attentive, compassionate, and selfless souls you could ever meet. Whether tending to a medical need, babysitting at a moment’s notice, or simply stepping in wherever help was needed, Anita never hesitated. Caring for others came as naturally to her as breathing.
She made her home in the country at Brazos Point, Texas, where her house was always a welcoming place. The aroma of home-cooked meals, fresh homemade biscuits, and unconditional love remains a memory deeply ingrained in the hearts of her family. Her grandchildren benefited greatly from both her nursing skills and her nurturing spirit. She was a wonderful grandmother, always ready to care for her grandkids with patience, tenderness, and joy.
Anita was also her family’s biggest supporter. She never missed a ball game—whether it was one of her children or grandchildren, she was always there, cheering from the stands with pride and love.
She had her own special brand of entertainment as well. Westerns played around the clock in her home—day or night, you could count on cowboys riding across the screen. And she delighted everyone with her famous owl hooting, a talent she performed purely for her own amusement and the laughter of those lucky enough to witness it.
Anita is survived by her grandchildren: Phillip West, Jordan Smith Roddenberry, Reagan Smith-LaFon, Jesse Smith, Logan Smith, Ty Smith, Blaik Smith, and Hunter Smith, as well as 18 great-grandchildren, each of whom she loved deeply.
Anita was preceded in death by her husband, James Smith; her parents; and her grandchild, Sara Walls.
A visitation will be held on Monday, April 13, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Lawson Funeral Home in Meridian, Texas, with a funeral service to follow at 2:00 p.m. She will then be laid to rest beside her late husband at Brazos Point Cemetery in Brazos Point, Texas.
She will be remembered for her warm hugs, her comforting presence, her lovingly prepared meals, and the simple, sweet words she so often spoke: “How are you, darling?” Those words, and the love behind them, will echo in the hearts of all who knew her.
She leaves behind a legacy of faith, service, laughter, and deep family devotion. She will be profoundly missed, but her love will live on in the lives she touched so gently and generously.
Arrangements were entrusted to Lawson Funeral Home, Meridian, Texas 254-435-2792.
