Athelle Newbrough

Athelle Damron Newbrough, age 93, of Dallas, passed away on Wednesday evening, January 25, 2017, at her residence

A graveside service will be held at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, January 28, in the Fulton Cemetery near Walnut Springs. Her family will conduct the services. There will be no formal visitation.

Athelle was born September 2, 1923, in Walnut Springs, Texas. She was the first child born to the late Ernest Lee Damron and Ruby Exa Ownby Damron, followed a few minutes later by her identical twin sister, Modelle Damron Clowers. Athelle grew up and was raised in Walnut Springs.

She married Frederick Leo Mays in 1944 and he passed away in 1963. In 1970 she married William E. Newbrough and he died in 2001. While raising her children as a widow, she worked as a rural mail carrier at Azle, Texas. She continued carrying the mail for 25 years. Athelle was a member of the Church of Christ and raised all her children to be Christians. She was also preceded in death by siblings, Myrtle Doris Mahaney, Lucy Ellen Gordon and Kenneth Reece Damron.

Athelle is survived by her children, Leo Gayle Mays of Ft. Worth, Bondy Mays of Irving, Clay Mays of Salida, Colorado and Lita Nevitt of Ft. Worth; 6 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; sisters, Modelle Clowers, of Palmer, Ruby Ernestine Gilbreath of Meridian and Molly Sue Ward of Joshua; number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
