Betty Johannes

Betty Sue Johannes, age 83, of Clifton and a former resident of Meridian, passed away early Thursday morning, December 29, 2016, in the Lutheran Sunset Home in Clifton.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M.Saturday, January 7, 2017, in the Faith Lutheran Church in Meridian, Rev. Herb Lammert officiating. Private family only interment will be in the St. Olaf Lutheran Cemetery (Rock Church) near Cranfills Gap.

Betty Sue Urban was born March 16, 1933, in Kilgore, Texas, a daughter of the late Albert Emil Ludwig Urban and Fanny Mae Streety Urban. She was raised in the Kilgore area and grew up in the oil fields of East Texas. She moved to Cuero at an early age where she finished high school. She attended college at Victoria Junior College and later at Texas Lutheran College where she met and married Allen Bruce Johannes on August 1, 1954, in Cuero, Texas. The couple shared 62 years of marriage.

Betty taught school for over 40 years. She taught in Detroit, Columbus, Sealy, Haskell, Lockhart, Comfort, Burton S&S Consolidated, Kopperl, and Clifton. While in Clifton, she organized the Art Department at Clifton Middle School. Betty received numerous awards during her teaching career.

She was a proud member of the Bosque River Valley Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution where she served as Chapter Librarian. Her patriotic ancestor was Lt. Argulus Poynter. Betty was also a member of the Bosque County Historical Commission, Bosque County Retired Teachers Association, and Faith Lutheran Church in Meridian.

Reading, camping, traveling, genealogy, and crafts were here hobbies and interests.

Memorials may be made to Faith Lutheran Church in Meridian or a charity of choice.

She is survived by her husband, Allen Johannes, of Clifton; daughter, Laura, and her husband, Rev. Michael Vaughan of Clifton; son, Eric Johannes of Palestine; grandchildren, Avery Morse and wife, Heidi, Becky Vaughan and husband, Will Hale; 6 great-grandchildren; sister, Kathy Winkler and husband, Eric, of Brenham; and a number of other relatives and many friends.
