Leona Jean Dickey was born to Cleo and Margaret Hanshew in Johnson County on June 28,1940. She was the oldest of 4 children, having 1 sister and 3 brothers.

Leona married Charles Dickey Sr. on May 19, 1963. She had two children of her own, and Charles had four. This was the beginning of a wonderful life, full of great adventures. They moved to Morgan, Texas, and their family continued to grow with the arrival of their son. Then they were blessed with 2 more children that they loved as their very own.

Leona worked at various jobs before she started working for the Morgan School District. This was her favorite job of all because she loved to meet the needs of others. Being able to be there for the children and co-workers was such a blessing, things such as making sure that all had a good meal were important to her. She retired from the school after 17 years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Morgan for 59 years.  She served as the worship leader and sang for many years, among many other areas of service within the church.  She was always giving her time and heart to the community. She volunteered at the Treasure Chest every Wednesday until she was no longer able to go.

As her children, we were truly blessed with a mother who believed in serving others and doing the Lord’s work wherever it was needed. She taught us that when you do anything, do it as though you are doing it for the Lord; this is pleasing to the Lord.  We would wake up on Sunday morning to Mama singing the gospel music to the radio, as she prepared our breakfast. No matter where Mama went in her journey here on earth, her presence blessed others. She will be missed greatly by all that knew her and those whose lives she touched along the way.

Left to cherish her memories are her children, Sandra Spurling and husband, Jerry; Janie Pinnell and husband, Harland; Nora Mayberry and husband, Dan; Angie Irby and husband, Jerry; Charles Dickey, Jr., and wife Diane; Alan Dickey and wife, Helen; Rusty Dickey and wife, Pattie; Paul Dickey and wife, Kami; 31 Grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; 2 great -great-grandchildren; brothers, William Hanshew, Tommy Hanshew, Alfred Hanshew; 3 sisters-in-law, 1 brother-in-law; extended family: Billie Ruth and Ricky Don Jourden,, Mike and Cindy Drain, Donna Kay Jones,, Arlene Swiney, Gay and Stanley Myers,, Doug Swiney; lifelong friend, Nancy Flurry; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends
