Lloyd James "Sunshine" Kuykendall, a beloved member of the Kopperl community, passed away peacefully on May 9, 2026, in Waco, Texas, surrounded by his loved ones.
Born on June 30, 1928, in Hill County, Texas, Lloyd lived a life deeply rooted in family, hard work, and community service, earning the affectionate nickname "Sunshine" for his radiant personality and infectious laughter.
A graduate of Kopperl High School, Lloyd embraced a lifetime of varied and dedicated work experiences. He began his career at the Kopperl gin in September 1947, shortly thereafter joining the railroad in November 1947 until May 1948. His industrious spirit then led him to Cleburne Poultry from August 1954 to April 1957, followed by service as a road grader in Bosque County from April 1957 to August 1961. One of his most notable roles was as the Postmaster, a position he was appointed to by President John F. Kennedy, serving faithfully from August 1961 until October 1992. Subsequent to this, Lloyd contributed to Meridian State Park (April 1993 to January 1996) and later served as Bosque County’s 911 Coordinator, Emergency Manager, and Address Manager from January 1996 to October 2003, during which time he painstakingly named all the roads in the county.
Beyond his professional life, Lloyd was a man of many passions and talents. He took great pleasure in working cows and cherished the times he spent alongside his son in the fields on the family farm. His relation with people was evident in the fire trucks he acquired, and his dedication to service was underscored by his involvement with the Kopperl Volunteer Fire Department. A proud member of the Masonic lodge, Lloyd recently received his 70-year pin, a testament to his long-standing commitment and character.
Known for his happy demeanor, lively storytelling, and genuine love for people, Lloyd was a true people person who never met a stranger. His vibrant presence and warmth left an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents, James Kuykendall and Minnie Bullard, as well as his siblings: Herman Kuykendall, Odell Smith, Everett Kuykendall, twin girls Annie and Minnie Kuykendall, and unnamed twins.
He is lovingly remembered and survived by his devoted son, Lloyd Wayne Kuykendall, and wife Patricia; his daughter, Pam Kuykendall; grandchildren, Stephanie, Shannon, Stacy, JoAnn, Paula, Resa, Dusty, Chad; fourteen great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Family, friends, and community members are invited to honor and celebrate Lloyd’s life at a visitation on May 16, 2026, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. at Kopperl Baptist Church, located at 177 CR 1859, Kopperl, Texas 76652.
