Rex Alan Broome

Rex Alan Broome, age 67, of Morgan, passed away on Thursday, November 28, 2019 in Waco, Texas, after a short battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be 2 P.M., Wednesday, December 4, 2019 at Lawson Funeral Home in Meridian. Rev. Richard Creech will officiate. Burial will be in the Kopperl Cemetery in Kopperl, Texas. Visitation will be from 6 P.M. until 8 P.M., Tuesday, December 3, 2019 at Lawson Funeral Home in Meridian. Pallbearers will be Alan Broome, Kirk Boyd, Tom Duckworth, Chuck Smith, Jimmy Fowler, and Charles Buzan. Honorary Pallbearer will be Daxson Webb.

Rex was born in  Fort Worth, Texas on July 12, 1952 to Raleigh and Violet Broome.  Rex graduated from Haltom High School.  In spite of his suburban Fort Worth roots, Rex has been a part of the Lakeside Village community since the late 1950's, having spent his summers and Christmas holidays at a family cabin in Lakeside Village.  It was this time at Lake Whitney that fostered his love of the outdoors and a slower pace of life.  He married Linda Faye Medford on October 8, 1971, and they became permanent residents of Lakeside Village in 1975.  The Village, as locals call it, needed a fire department to protect its residents and surrounding rural areas.  Rex stepped up and became a founding member of the Lakeside Village Volunteer Fire Department ("VFD") in 1976.  He became its Chief in 1978, and proudly held that position until his death.  His dedication to his community's residents, weekenders, business owners, and visitors, and to those who life in surrounding areas, resulted in a VFD that is second to none.

All who knew him, know Rex was a giant of a man, but also realize his wife, Linda, was his anchor.  He loved her beyond words and knew that her love was his greatest strength.  He would readily admit that without her, he would never have been the man he came to be.  Together, they enjoyed fishing, hunting, and traveling.  Rex was also a proud father that strove to provide his children with the tools and traits they needed to be successful in whatever path they chose.  His third great love was deer hunting.  Until this year, Rex had never missed an opening weekend in almost fifty years.  As he laughingly explained, any project that came up in October would have to wait until ADS - or "After Deer Season" to complete.  He cherished the days spent in a stand with his children, and especially his grandchildren.  There were no better times than those spent around a campfire on a clear moonless night in Shive, Texas, telling stories and laughing with friends and family.

Rex is survived by his wife of 48 years, Linda; his brother, Terry Lee Broome and wife, Marita, of Waco, Texas; his two children and their spouses, Alan Broome and wife, Misty, of Waxahachie, Texas, and Amy Webb and husband, David, of Tolar, Texas; as well as his five grandchildren, Dalton Webb, Daxson Webb, Sutton Broome, Truett Broome, and Ainsley Broome; other relatives and many friends.

In lieu of flowers, the Broome family requests that donations in Rex's memory be made to the Lakeside Village VFD.  Donations should be mailed to 115 CR 1296, Morgan, Texas 76671.  In closing, Rex would say to join your local VFD.  Stand up and step forward to protect the friends and neighbors of the communities you love and call home.  Tell the Chief, Rex sent you.
