Sara Lou McCombs, a beloved mother and friend, cherished educator, and vibrant soul, peacefully passed away at her home in Walnut Springs, Texas on May 12, 2026. Born on November 20, 1940, in Jacksboro, Texas, Sara lived a life marked by unwavering loyalty, an endless generosity, and an extraordinary ability to touch the hearts of everyone she encountered.
A graduate of Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth, Texas, where she majored in education and minored in theater, Sara devoted her career to inspiring young minds. She served as the Head of the English Department at Carroll High School in Southlake, Texas, and extended her talents to the classrooms of Colleyville, Arlington, and Walnut Springs. Her lasting legacy includes over twenty years as the unforgettable “Voice of the Dragons” during Southlake Carroll football games. Sara celebrated each graduation of her students with profound joy and was honored with numerous teaching awards by students, educators and the state.
Sara was known affectionately for her quick wit, fierce dedication to the upliftment of others, and indomitable spirit. Known widely as a gifted public speaker, others always knew they could count on her wisdom, support, and unwavering presence. She never met a stranger and left an imprint on every life she touched. Sara could be a captivating light one moment and an unseen force shaping everything the next. Tirelessly volunteering, she was the caretaker of all. And when it was her time to receive, she was humbled by the love reflected back to her from those she had served.Her love for the outdoors and gardening flourished alongside her delightful hobbies of theater and performance. She nurtured talent with her award winning directing and delighted audiences as LooLoo the clown - each pursuit reflecting her boundless energy and charismatic spirit.
Sara’s love of people was only eclipsed by her love for God. She lived her life as an example of the teachings of Christ. Embodying the essential lessons of compassion, humility, and unconditional love. Sara’s piano playing still rings in fellowship within the walls of her beloved Walnut Springs Baptist Church. And her famous tres leches cake is remembered fondly within her church family. A sweet symbol of how she brought people together through warmth and generosity.
Her family and friends were the center of her world. Whether casually throwing together some venison stroganoff for her kids or providing humor in the difficult times, Sara continually showed up for those she loved. To have known her and been close to her is one of the great gifts of this life.
Sara leaves behind her sons, David and Orlon, who will carry her memory lovingly forward. Sara was preceded in death by her husband Bruce, her parents Jim and Lavelle Bussey, and her sister Sue Staggs.
A memorial service celebrating Sara’s impactful life will be held on May 22, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. at Walnut Springs Baptist Church, located at 152 4th St., Walnut Springs, Texas. All who knew her are invited to gather in remembrance of a woman who gave so much and whose spirit continues to inspire.
Sara McCombs lived her life fully and fiercely, leaving a legacy of love, laughter, and light. To know her was to feel uplifted, cared for, and profoundly touched by a soul who truly made the world better simply by being in it.
