William H. (Bill) Watson, a man of many titles and a heart full of love, passed away peacefully at his ranch home in Bosque County, Texas, on May 15, 2025. He was 95.
Born on January 17, 1930, in Mosheim, Texas, to Ruby and Herbert C. Watson, Bill was first known simply as “Son.” As the eldest of nine children, he was lovingly called “Billy” by his eight younger siblings—a name that stayed with him in family circles throughout his life.
Bill was a devoted husband to Janette, Jewel, and Eva Sue, who preceded him in death in August 2023. He found love again with Sue, whom he famously met at a gas pump in Meridian. They married on January 11, 2011, and shared many joyful years together.
A dedicated and supportive father, Bill is survived by his children: Georgette McPherson and Rand, Billy Watson and Vickie, and Rusty Watson and Gayle. To his grandchildren, he was affectionately known as “GrandDad” and “GrandBill,” roles he cherished deeply.
Bill spent over five decades building a successful career in foodservice distribution. He began part-time work at Graham Paper Co. in 1948, later joining his father’s company, Watson Institutional Foods. The business evolved into Watson Sysco Foodservice and eventually became part of the Sysco organization. Bill retired in 2000, proud of the legacy he helped create.
He remained active in the community and was especially proud of his involvement with Texas Tech University, where he played a key role in establishing the Restaurant, Hotel, and Institutional Management (RHIM) Department. He also funded a scholarship for RHIM students, investing in the future of the hospitality industry.
An adventurous spirit, Bill loved to travel and kept his passport ready for the next destination—Hawaii being among his favorites. He also found great joy in ranching, transforming a piece of land in Bosque County into a thriving and beloved retreat.
Friends and family are invited to gather in celebration of Bill’s life—wearing Hawaiian shirts or ranching attire, just as he would have loved.
