Walnut Springs

Larry Ray Ayers (80) of Walnut Springs, TX passed away peacefully in his home July 7, 2022.  He was born January 18, 1942 with a twin sister, Lana Kay in Vernon, Texas. He graduated from Castleberry High School in Fort Worth in 1961. After High School Larry joined the Navy and was stationed on the USS Mountrail during the Cold War. The USS Mountrail was a transport/warship and was active during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Larry had many fond memories of sailing on this huge Navy ship in the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean. He loved the Navy and loved serving his country. Larry was a member of the Alvarado Masonic Lodge.

Larry graduated with an Associate of Arts Degree from TCC in 1974.

After his service in the Navy, Larry went to work for Bell Helicopter in 1965. He retired from Bell in 2002 as a Senior Quality Engineering Specialist. After retiring Larry worked at Rough Creek Lodge where he had the pleasure of meeting and getting to know the American Sniper, Chris Kyle, who often went there with friends and tragically, died there.

Larry was a Christian and great patriot who loved God, his country and his family above all else! People who knew Larry would use words like kind, generous, loving, good natured, and would say things like “he’d give you the shirt off his back” and “he never met a stranger”. He was truly one in a million and those of us who knew him will remember and love him for the rest of our lives.

Left behind to cherish his memory are his daughter Kristy, her husband Clay Roszell, granddaughter Michelle, her husband Ric Bowden, grandson Billy Key, his wife Stacy, granddaughter Stephanie, her husband Brandon Barbaro, five beloved great grandchildren: Robert, Caleb, Levi, Abigail and Journey, his sister Lawanda Smith, his sister Doris Garrett, brother-in-law David Garrett and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Larry loved each and every one of his immediate and extended family members with all his heart.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Roscoe Edward (Doc) and Verta Ree (Bertie) Ayers, his wife Ruby (Sandy), his twin sister Lana Dwinell, his brother-in-law Harry Dwinell, and his brother-in-law Jim Smith.

Larry’s life will be remembered and celebrated with interment at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery on July 22, 2022 at 9 am. Arrival at the cemetery should be 30 minutes early.
