Marjorie Fay Hobdy

November 24, 1929 ~ June 27, 2020 (age 90)

Obituary

Marjorie Blair Hobdy, 90, died of complications of old age and dementia on June 27, 2020.  She was born November 24, 1929 in Borger, Texas, to Ruth Ann Raney and Kirk Lewis Blair, and named Marjorie Fay Blair. After her father’s death when she was five years old, she and her four older siblings were raised by her mother in Arp and Sherman, Texas. Marjorie graduated from Sherman High School and briefly attended Austin College.

Her first four children were all born in Wichita Falls, Texas. After she married Ernest Eugene Hobdy, Sr, on May 7, 1964, they had one more child. Soon afterwards, Ernest’s two children joined the family, bringing the count to 7 children ranging from infant to high school.

Mom was a devout Christian who made sure we all went to church and received good religious instruction. She also took pride in her Native American heritage, serving as a regional representative for the Citizen Potawatomi Nation in Dallas-Fort Worth and attending many tribal gatherings.

Marjorie (or Marj to co-workers) worked as a secretary or executive secretary for most of her career. Her employers were varied - government agencies, schools, universities, and The Dallas Times Herald. She finished her working life at UT Southwestern’s News and Publications Office, and after her retirement was often asked to fill in as a temporary worker there. She loved her work and took great interest in learning about each new industry when she changed jobs.

Mom sewed lovely clothing for herself and her daughters. One summer she ran a “sewing boot camp” for all the girls plus a cousin. Once during school Christmas vacation, she taught all the kids to crochet - even the boys. She enjoyed watching all our various school activities and believed we could accomplish anything we set our minds to. She wanted us to get as much education as possible.

Marjorie is predeceased by her parents, all four siblings, and her oldest son, Kirk Thomas Lewis. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Ernest Eugene Hobdy, Sr. and her children Kathrin A. Lewis, Susan L. Wesley, Carla H. Kelly (Andy), Ernest Eugene (Gene) Hobdy, Jr., Kent B. Lewis (Audrey), and Jack Davis Hobdy (Ken), nieces Karin Kreager Watkins (Rocky) and Becky Meredith Moriak (Randy), nephew Hayden (Buster) M Meredith Jr., several grandchildren, plus great-grandchildren and great-nephews and great-nieces.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or to your local animal rescue group (Mom loved dogs).
